15th August – Farmers Day

Every year on 15th August, the seaside village of Blackrock, Co. Louth comes alive for what locals have long called Farmers Day.

Traditionally, this date marked a break in the busy harvest season, when farming families from across Louth and beyond would head to the coast for a well-earned day out. The streets and shoreline would be filled with horse-drawn carts, Sunday-best outfits and the sound of laughter as neighbours met, traded news and enjoyed the sea air.

Over time, the tradition evolved, but the spirit of Farmers Day remains — a celebration of community, rural heritage and the connection between town and countryside. For many older residents, the memories of those bustling August days are part of Blackrock’s story, passed down through generations.

Today, while the event has changed with people coming for coffee and pastries –  the date still holds a special place in local history. It’s a reminder of simpler times, when 15th August was circled on every farmer’s calendar — not for work, but for well-deserved rest and friendship by the shore.
